Calling comic lovers!

Do you find comics fascinating? Do you wonder how they come together? Thinking about writing and publishing your own? Join us for a special two-day workshop all about comics! This pre-conference genre track will be held July 24-25, 2025, just before the general writers conference.

You’ll get

  • History of comics (1960s-1990s)
  • History of comics (1990s-present)
  • Formatting comics
  • The process of comic writer/artist communication and collaboration
  • Publication process and industry info (traditional, imprint, digital, self-publishing, etc.)
  • And yes, work on your own comic
  • Practice pitching (if you choose)

Your instructors are Professional Writing grad Contessa Hussong (2025) and Multimedia Journalism student Caleb Heffron (2026). Caleb and Contessa have been interested in comic books for their entire lives and are excited to share their knowledge with you. This session began as an independent study where they created a series of weekly classes taught to interested students during the Fall 2024 semester.

Join us at the Taylor University Professional Writers Conference / Genre Track for a two-day session learning all about (and creating) comic books.

Just $139 includes the Thursday afternoon and Friday morning session, Thursday dinner, Friday breakfast, and Friday lunch. On-campus housing is available for Thursday night (price not included in registration).

The session begins at 1:00 on Thursday, June 24 and ends at noon on Friday, June 25. The general conference, also $139, begins on Friday at 1:00. You can attend BOTH the track and the general conference for a reduced rate of $249.
