If you’re reading this, chances are you have a story you want to write. The truth is, most people do. Everyone carries around an idea for a book they wish they could put on paper. The wonderful part? Anyone can learn to write a good story. It just takes time and practice.
I want to set my students up for success. They may have a day job but maintain their dream of one day getting their book published. The Professional Writing classes teach them the basics, and then their continued learning can happen at writing conferences.
Over my time in college, I’ve made it a point to jump on opportunities that take me outside the traditional path. By taking leaps into classes not necessarily required, I have studied film production, taken historical trips, and worked on grants for non-profits.
Hemmingway made a wager among his writer friends, claiming he could write a story in six words. They took him up on the bet, and on a napkin, Hemingway wrote the famous words: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” His friends paid him $10, no questions asked.
So, you want to be a novelist — or perhaps you’re hoping to be the next great manuscript editor or literary agent. Why should you take a journalism course? Put simply, it’s to grow your skillset as a writer, to make you well-rounded, and (let’s be honest) possibly earn you a buck or two
