“Critique group” is an intimidating term. No one likes to feel “critiqued,” and sharing art you’ve poured your heart and soul into with people you don’t know very well (yet) can be a little scary.
I’m not denying any of that. But it’s totally worth it.

It’s easy to get stuck when your head is in one fictional world for a long period of time. This is when you tend to lose the forest for the trees and vice versa. How do you get unstuck and expand your writing horizons? You do it with a little spice I like to call genre hopping.
So, you’ve finished your novel! Congrats! Whether it’s your first, third, or seventh novel, it’s still a huge accomplishment. However, your feelings of euphoria are quickly fading at the thought of (cue dramatic music) editing.
It’s all material.
That’s what I tell myself no matter the situation. Now, that’s not much consolation when you whack your pinky toe on the edge of your desk or walk into a wall after waking up from a hard nap, but it’s true.
A draft sprinkled with poor grammar, inconsistencies, and misused words will not be taken seriously in any context. Still, as authors, it’s easy to look right past our writing’s errors. How can we sharpen our self-proofreading skills?
