We’re always up for a trip to Lake Michigan! Several PWR students got just that when we attended the Maranatha Christian Writers Conference in September 2016 in Muskegon, Michigan. With dozens of workshops, keynote speakers (including best-selling author Don Piper), the opportunities to have one-on-one appointments with editors and agents, and a little walk down to the beach—a good time was had by all.
And who did we have the pleasure of running into? Our former Taylor University president and his wife, Gene and Marylou Habecker! Students who attended were Laura Koenig, Becca Schriner, Taylor Puitz, Ari Lemont, Jessie Stover, Marshall Oppel, and Chrysa Keenon.
All seven students were able to practice their pitches and gain advice. Junior, Jessie Stover said, “I really enjoyed the conference. There is a big difference between a secular and Christian writing conference. I personally can’t get over how inviting and encouraging everyone I met was. We had the opportunity to show how professional we really can be and the contacts I made gave me a better idea of the direction I want to go after college.”
One of our students even made a contact who has given her a part-time editing job she juggles while still in school! This just goes to show that you never know what will happen or who you’ll meet at a writing conference.
